How to Use the Exam Score Calculator
- Choose Grading Method: Select either "Simple Sum / Average" or "Weighted Average" based on how your scores are combined.
- Simple Sum / Average: Use this if all your scores contribute equally based on their possible marks (e.g., total points earned out of total points possible).
- Weighted Average: Use this if different assignments or exams have different levels of importance (weights) in your final grade (e.g., Midterm 30%, Final Exam 50%, Homework 20%).
- Add Score Entries: Click the "Add Score Entry" button for each exam, assignment, quiz, or graded component. Two entries are provided by default.
- Enter Details for Each Entry:
- Name (Optional): Give a descriptive name (e.g., "Midterm 1," "Homework Assignment 3").
- Score: Enter the score you obtained for that entry.
- Out of: Enter the total possible score for that entry.
- Weight (%) (for Weighted Average only): If you selected "Weighted Average," enter the percentage weight this entry contributes to your final grade (e.g., 20 for 20%). The "Weight (%)" column will only appear if this method is chosen.
- Calculate: Once all entries are added and details filled, click the "Calculate Scores" button.
- Review Results:
- Score Summary: Shows your total score obtained out of the total possible, your overall unweighted percentage, and if applicable, your final weighted grade and the total weight percentage used.
- Individual Entry Breakdown: A table details each entry's name, score, individual percentage, and (if weighted) its assigned weight and contribution to the final grade.
- Modify or Remove Entries: You can change any input value and recalculate. To remove an entry row, click the button next to it.
Understanding Grading Methods
Simple Sum / Average:
This method calculates your overall percentage by summing all the scores you obtained and dividing by the sum of all possible scores, then multiplying by 100. Each point has equal value, regardless of the assignment's size or perceived importance.
Formula: (Total Score Obtained / Total Possible Score) × 100%
Weighted Average:
This method assigns a specific "weight" (usually a percentage) to each graded component, reflecting its importance in the final grade. For example, a final exam might be weighted more heavily than a weekly quiz. The calculator computes the contribution of each component to the final grade (score/total × weight) and sums these contributions.
Formula for one entry's contribution: (Score / Total Possible for Entry) × Weight % for Entry
Final Weighted Grade = Sum of all (Entry Percentage × Entry Weight %)
For an accurate final grade out of 100%, the sum of all weights should ideally be 100%. If your weights sum to a different value, the "Final Weighted Grade" will reflect this (e.g., if weights sum to 80%, the grade is effectively out of 80).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What if I don't know the weight for an assignment in a weighted system?
You'll need to refer to your course syllabus or ask your instructor for the weighting scheme. Accurate weights are essential for a correct weighted average calculation.
Can I calculate my grade if I haven't completed all assignments yet?
Yes. If using the "Weighted Average" method, you can enter the scores and weights for the components you've completed. The "Total Weight Used" will show you what percentage of your final grade has been determined so far. The "Final Weighted Grade" will be based on this partial weight. To project a final grade, you might need to estimate scores for remaining assignments.
How many score entries can I add?
You can add as many score entries as you need by clicking the "Add Score Entry" button. There isn't a fixed limit, but a very large number of entries might make the page long.
Is my score data saved?
No, all calculations are performed client-side within your browser. The scores and weights you enter are not sent to our servers or stored by us. If you refresh or close the page, the entered data will be lost. Please see our Privacy Policy for more details.
