GPA Calculator (Semester & Cumulative)
Stay on top of your academic progress with our easy-to-use GPA Calculator. Input your current semester's course grades and credits to find your Semester GPA. Optionally, include your previous cumulative GPA and total credits to see your updated Cumulative GPA. Uses a standard 4.0 scale.
Grade Point Scale Used (Common 4.0 Scale):
- A = 4.00
- A- = 3.70
- B+ = 3.30
- B = 3.00
- B- = 2.70
- C+ = 2.30
- C = 2.00
- C- = 1.70
- D+ = 1.30
- D = 1.00
- F = 0.00
Note: This is a widely used grading scale. However, your specific educational institution may use a different scale (e.g., some might not use +/-, or might have A+ > 4.0). This calculator does not account for grades like Pass/Fail (P/F), Incomplete (I), or Withdrawn (W) as they typically do not contribute to GPA quality points in the standard calculation.
Disclaimer: This GPA calculator is provided for estimation purposes only. Calculations are based on the standard 4.0 scale shown. Always refer to your official academic transcript and your institution's specific grading policies for official GPA calculations and academic standing.
How to Use the GPA Calculator
- Previous Standing (Optional): If you want to calculate your new cumulative GPA, enter your "Current Cumulative GPA" and the "Total Credits Earned So Far" from your previous semesters. If you're a first-semester student or only want your semester GPA, you can leave these fields blank.
- Add Current Courses: Click the "Add Course" button for each subject you are taking in the current semester. Three rows are provided by default.
- Enter Course Details: For each course row:
- Course Name (Optional): You can enter a name for the course for your reference (e.g., "Calculus 101," "Intro to Psychology").
- Credits: Enter the number of credit hours for that course (e.g., 3, 4, 1.5).
- Grade: Select the letter grade you received or expect to receive for that course from the dropdown menu. The corresponding grade points are shown.

Understanding GPA (Grade Point Average)
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standard way to measure academic achievement. Here's a breakdown:
- Grade Points: Each letter grade (A, B, C, etc.) is assigned a numerical value, typically on a 4.0 scale. For example, an A might be 4.0 points, a B might be 3.0 points, and so on.
- Quality Points: For each course, quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade points for your received grade by the number of credit hours for that course.
(Quality Points = Grade Point Value × Course Credits) - Semester GPA: This is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned in a semester by the total credit hours attempted in that semester.
(Semester GPA = Total Semester Quality Points / Total Semester Credits) - Cumulative GPA: This is your overall GPA, reflecting your performance across all semesters completed so far. It's calculated by dividing your total quality points earned in all semesters by the total credit hours attempted in all semesters.
(Cumulative GPA = Total Overall Quality Points / Total Overall Credits)
Maintaining a good GPA is often important for academic standing, scholarships, and future educational or career opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What if my school uses a different grading scale (e.g., 5.0 scale, or different points for +/- grades)?
This calculator is based on the common 4.0 scale listed. If your institution uses a significantly different scale or point system, the results from this calculator may not match your official GPA. You would need to use your institution's specific calculation method or a calculator designed for that scale.
How many courses can I add?
You can add as many courses as you need for your semester by clicking the "Add Course" button. There isn't a strict limit, but typically a semester has between 3 to 7 courses.
What if a course has 0 credits but I received a grade?
Courses with 0 credits (like some labs or non-credit seminars) typically do not factor into GPA calculations. You should generally only include courses that carry credit hours and contribute to your GPA.
Does this calculator save my data?
No, all calculations are performed client-side within your browser. The course details, grades, and GPA information you enter are not sent to our servers or stored by us. If you refresh or close the page, the entered data will be lost. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for more information.
